India logs 798 new Covid infections, 5 deaths; 145 sub-variant cases

India reported 798 fresh cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. With the new cases, the active caseload in the country stood at 4,091, the ministry’s morning bulletin added.

A total of five deaths – (2 from Kerala, 1 each from Maharashtra, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu) were also reported during the past day. The total deaths due to coronavirus reached 5,33,351 in the country.

A total of 145 cases of the coronavirus sub-variant JN.1 were reported in the country till December 28, 2023.

From the total cases, 41 were reported from Kerala, 36 from Gujarat, 34 from Karnataka, 14 from Goa, nine from Maharashtra, four from Rajasthan, four from Tamil Nadu, two from Telangana, and one from Delhi.

Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Thursday said the 50-year-old person diagnosed with the JN.1 sub-variant in the national capital has recovered, adding that there were no active cases of the variant in the city.
