The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has strongly condemned the assault on resident doctors at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and has demanded to suspend those responsible for attack.

“It has been seen that several resident doctors, including female colleagues, providing essential emergency medical services, Heath care workers were brutally assaulted by individuals claiming to be BHU students armed with sharp weapons, lathis and other such weapons. The unfortunate incident happened in the presence of authorities, including the Deputy Medical Superintendent, Emergency In-charge, along with the Head of the Medicine Department was an eye opening incident that to should be taken very seriously”, said FAIMA in a statement.

Adding further, it said that the unfortunate part was the security personnel were unable to prevent or mitigate the violence at the scenes. This act of assault though disheartening is unfortunately not surprising as the medical fraternity has earlier faced attacks.

“We urge other National /State doctors’ association to support residents of BHU and Join us in taking an initiative to create a healthcare system that prioritizes the safety of health care workers. The FAIMA demands immediate action to address such sensitive issues and suspend the individuals responsible for this heinous act. Implement enhanced security measures in the emergency services at IMS, BHU and increase the number of resident doctors in the emergency department to distribute the workload and improve patient care. Arrangement of proper security management and training to the existing security personnel about the way to manage such attack.
