A 20-year-old girl from Ethiopia who was suffering with a rare recurrent parotid tumor has got a new ray of hope at a hospital here. As per the national library of medicine report, the parotid tumor is rare accounting for 0.05-2 per 100,000 inhabitants across the world.

The tumor of low-grade malignancy and extensive involvement presented a complex challenge for the doctors as the patient had undergone surgeries in Ethiopia, but her condition continued to deteriorate further. However, a team of doctors led by Surgical Oncologist Dr. Vivek Gupta and Dr. Naveen Chobdar at PSRI hospital undertook the intricate surgery which lasted for nine hours. “Treating such a unique case at a young age of 20 is indeed a rare feat. We are gratified that we have succeeded,” said Dr Gupta.

The surgery which spanned from 11 am to 8 pm involved meticulous resection and free TFL flap reconstruction. The patient was discharged on the 5th postoperative day with no tracheostomy and resuming oral intake, said the hospital.
