AIIMS initiates study on speech recovery by music for stroke patients

The Department of Neurology, AIIMS Delhi, in collaboration with IIT-New Delhi has initiated a study on customization and adaptation of the treatment strategies for patients with Aphasia, which is commonly known as the loss of language function.

Aphasia or the loss of language function can be caused by brain damage due to stroke in 21-38 per cent of acute stroke patients, said the hospital. It said that early and timely speech and language rehabilitation can aid in better recovery.

AIIMS in a statement said that some studies across the world have shown that may improve verbal fluency. However, in India, there is lack of similar adaptive strategies. The department of Neurology, AIIMS, in collaboration with IIT-New Delhi is conducting a study on customization and adaptation of the treatment strategies which such patients need for recovery of their global speech and language functions. This will be provided free of charge to the patients under the ICMR funded study, said the hospital.
