RML hospital starts India’s first Transgender OPD services

Dr. RML Hospital on Sunday inaugurated India’s first dedicated Outpatient Department (OPD) for Transgenders community on the occasion of the start of Sewa Pakhwada. The speciality OPD clinic for transgenders will be carried out every Friday 2 to 4 p.m

The initiative has been started to avoid the difficulties encountered by transgender community to access healthcare services, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination and social apathy. In addition to the inauguration of the transgender OPD, the hospital also organized a blood donation camp on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.

The key features of the facility include free treatment, investigations and sex change surgery, separate OPD registration counter for these clinics to facilitate smooth process and medicine (Physician) facility for various diseases. The patients will also get the Endocrinology facility with Clinico-psychological assessment, Plastic surgery facility for various related surgeries and Dermatology facility for related issues among others.

Inaugurating the facilities, Dr. (Prof.) Ajay Shukla, Director, RML Hospital, underlined the importance of providing equitable healthcare services to the transgender community. “Transgender individuals were facing numerous difficulties in accessing our hospital’s services,” said Dr Shukla.

“Their numbers in the hospital were negligible, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination. Hence, on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, we have initiated this special OPD dedicated to their healthcare needs,” he added.
