Former Union secretary of Biotechnology department Dr S Ramachandran’s wife Mrs Bhama Ramachandran has donated INR two crores to AIIMS Endowment Fund.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in a statement on Friday said that the grant has been made to encourage thr excellence in the pursuit of research and academic activities in the field of Neuroscience and for the creation of a Chair of Neurosciences which will be known as the ‘Dr. S. Ramachandran Chair for Neurosciences’.

Former Union secretary Dr. Ramachandran was an Indian scientist responsible for the setting of the Department of Biotechnology under the Government of India. He became the first secretary to the department in 1986.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2011 for his contributions to Indian science. He has mentored many eminent scientists in various premier Indian institutes including Indian Institute of Science, Madurai Kamaraj University, Jawaharlal Nehru University among others.
