World Asthma Day 2024: Rising trends of Asthma Post Covid era

World Asthma Day, observed on the first Tuesday of May each year, draws attention to the rising concerns around asthma—a chronic respiratory condition exacerbated significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent data suggests a sharp increase in the number of asthma patients globally, with India facing a particularly severe impact. The statistics are alarming, with asthma-related deaths in India accounting for nearly 46 per cent of the global total, highlighting an urgent need for awareness and intervention.

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the situation, leaving a large population segment struggling with long-term respiratory issues post-infection. Annually, asthma is linked to approximately 200,000 deaths in India alone, underscoring a dire public health challenge.

Recognizing the symptoms of asthma can lead to timely treatment, which is crucial in managing the condition effectively, health experts point out that symptoms can vary significantly among individuals but commonly include difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pain, wheezing during exhalation, persistent coughing, and shortness of breath. These symptoms often worsen due to exposure to allergens, dust, smoke, and fine pollution particles.

Tips to manage asthma in summers

If you have outdoor activities planned, try to schedule them earlier in the day. This will lessen your chances of going outside during the hottest times of the day.

Continue consultation with your pulmonologist ahead of the season to discuss treatment options if you know that your asthma is more difficult to control during hot months. The goal is to work with your provider to ensure that your asthma is well-controlled.

Keep your asthma inhalers out of direct sunlight and out of the heat compartment of your car. It is wise to keep inhalers in a closed and cool place.

In asthma care, it’s critical to make sure your asthma is well-managed from the beginning. Remember to take your asthma controller medicines on a regular basis, and always have rescue medications on hand.

Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
