PM Modi shares views on fasting during podcast with AI researcher Lex Fridman

In a podcast with world’s renowned AI researcher Lex Fridman, Prime minister Modi has revealed his insight on fasting. Earlier, showing the respect, Lex Fridman said that he had been fasting for “almost two days, 45 hours” to prepare for his podcast conversation with Prime Minister.

The researcher asked Mr Modi that he has read that Indian he often fast for many days. The AI researcher asked the Prime Minister to explain why he fasts, and where does his mind go when he fast?”

PM Modi shared his insights and highlighted that in India, religious traditions are deeply intertwined with daily life, noting that Hinduism is not merely a set of rituals but a philosophy guiding life itself.

Mr Modi explained that fasting is one of the many paths outlined in Indian scriptures to elevate the body, mind, intellect, soul, and humanity, serving as a tool to cultivate discipline and balance within oneself.

 “Our Supreme Court once gave a brilliant interpretation of Hinduism. They have stated that Hinduism is not about rituals or methods of worship, but rather it’s a way of living, a philosophy that guides life itself. And in our scriptures, there is deep discussion on elevating the body, mind, intellect, soul, and humanity. They outline various paths, traditions, and systems to achieve this, and fasting is one of them, but fasting alone isn’t everything.” PM Modi said.

“In India, whether you see it culturally or philosophically, sometimes I see that fasting is a way to cultivate discipline.” Modi added.

‘Fasting Can Accelerate Thinking’

The Prime Minister also argued on how fasting can impact one’s mental capacity and creativity. He noted that fasting sharpens the senses and accelerates the thinking process, allowing individuals to think outside the box and gain fresh perspectives.

“Another thing I’ve experienced is that fasting can greatly accelerate the thinking process, and can give a fresh perspective. You start thinking outside the box. I don’t know if everyone experiences this, but I certainly do.” PM Modi said.

Modi shared his personal experience, where fasting has never slowed him down; instead, it often enhances his productivity and clarity of thought. This perspective aligns with the broader cultural understanding in India, where fasting is seen as a means to refine both the inner and outer self.
