Delhi govt reserves beds in hospitals for heatstroke patients

Amid the ongoing heatwaves in the capital city and adjoining areas, Delhi government on Monday announced to reserve two beds each for heatstroke patients in all government-run hospitals while five beds will be reserved at the LNJP Hospital.

Delhi health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that as heat waves in the city are increasing, an advisory has already been issued to all the hospitals. “ Along with that a new advisory is being issued to all the hospitals. In view of the increasing heat waves, two beds each in all the 26 hospitals of the Delhi Government, and five beds in Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital (LNJP) have been reserved for patients suffering from heat waves”, he said.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted a higher number of heatwave days in northwest India and adjoining parts of the central region in June, with a brief relief from scorching conditions in the next few days. “Except for a few parts of southern peninsular India, normal to above-normal maximum temperatures are expected across the country in June”, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

“Above-normal heatwave days are likely in northwest India and the adjoining parts of the central region in June. Normally, northwest India and the adjoining areas record two-three heatwave days in June. This time, we expect four-six days of heatwave in this region,” he said.

Mr Mohapatra said northwestern and central parts of the country are likely to get some relief from the scorching heat after three days due to a western disturbance and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea. “There could be thunderstorm activity in northwest India and rain in the western Himalayan region,” he said.
