Medical colleges can’t compel resident doctors to stay in hostel

Amid reports of many private medical colleges charging exorbitant fees for hostel accommodation and making it mandatory to stay, the National Medical Commission has said that colleges can’t compel resident doctors to stay in hostels.

“It will be mandatory for the colleges to provide appropriate residential accommodation to post-graduate students. However, it will not be mandatory for students to stay in hostels”, the NMC said in a notification on Friday.

The NMC said that the number of complaints have been received from PG students alleging that the Medical Colleges are compelling them to stay in the hostel offered by the colleges and a hefty amount is being charged on this account. This is a violation of Regulation 5.6 of the PGMER, 2023, it said.

Failing to implement the regulations, the NMC said, will invite action against medical colleges which may include monetary penalty, reduction of seats, stoppage of admission etc.
