22-year-old woman undergoes for decade long facial tumour through Scarless Surgery

Sharda Hospital successfully performed a rare scarless surgery to remove a massive benign facial tumor in 22-year-old Ms. Preeti Kumari, who received free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. The complex procedure not only ensured complete removal of the tumor but also preserved the patient’s facial appearance, vision-related structures, and oral functions without leaving any visible scars.

The patient had been living with a progressively enlarging facial swelling for nearly 12 years. Over time, the tumor had significantly displaced vital structures around the eye socket and nasal cavity, resulting in facial deformity and increasing functional concerns. Access to advanced treatment through Ayushman Bharat enabled the patient to receive specialized surgical care without financial burden.

Following detailed clinical and radiological evaluation, Dr Rohit Punga, Director & Unit Head – Cranio Maxillo Facial Surgery, planned a highly specialized Transoral Resection via Le Fort Access Osteotomy. During the procedure, the external carotid artery was ligated to ensure safe surgical access and minimize blood loss. Through an entirely intraoral approach, he carefully mobilized the maxillary bone to access the tumor. The huge tumor was removed while preserving critical structures, including the floor of the orbit, nasal septum, cheekbone prominence, upper jaw, and teeth. The maxilla was then repositioned and stabilized using titanium miniplates, restoring normal facial anatomy and function.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Rohit Punga, Director & Unit Head – Cranio Maxillo Facial Surgery, at the hospital said, “This was a highly challenging case because the tumor had gradually displaced critical facial structures over many years. Our objective was to achieve complete tumor removal while preserving the patient’s facial appearance, vision-related structures, and oral functions. By utilizing a transoral Le Fort access osteotomy approach, we were able to remove the entire tumor through the mouth without any external facial incision, ensuring a scarless outcome and faster recovery. Cases like these demonstrate how advanced cranio-maxillofacial surgery can restore both function and confidence for patients.” The patient recovered well following surgery and continues to show encouraging progress. This successful outcome reflects Sharda Hospital’s expertise in treating complex craniofacial conditions through advanced surgical techniques.
